Intent

At Grinling Gibbons Primary School, we believe that music is a powerful and universal language that enriches children’s lives, nurtures creativity and supports personal development. Our ambition is for every child to develop a lifelong appreciation of music and to recognise its significance across different cultures, communities and traditions.

Through a rich and inclusive curriculum, pupils develop their skills as performers, composers and listeners whilst building a secure understanding of musical concepts and vocabulary. We aim to inspire children to express themselves creatively, explore their musical potential and develop the confidence to participate fully in musical experiences.

Music contributes significantly to the wider development of our pupils, fostering important life skills such as collaboration, communication, resilience, leadership and critical thinking. We believe all children should have access to high-quality musical opportunities regardless of their starting points and that every child should leave Grinling Gibbons Primary School with the confidence to see themselves as a musician.

Our curriculum celebrates diversity and promotes cultural understanding through exposure to a wide range of musical genres, traditions and influential musicians from around the world. Through this, children develop an appreciation of different cultures and gain the cultural capital needed to thrive in modern Britain and beyond.

Implementation

Our music curriculum is carefully sequenced to ensure pupils build knowledge, skills and understanding progressively throughout their primary education. We use Kapow Primary Music to support the delivery of a broad and balanced curriculum, providing clear progression in musical learning from Early Years through to Year 2.

In Key Stage 1, children develop their understanding of pulse, rhythm, pitch, tempo and dynamics through singing, listening, composing, movement and performance activities. They learn to express their ideas creatively whilst developing confidence and enjoyment in music-making.

In Key Stage 2, instrumental learning forms a significant part of our music provision. Pupils in Year 3 learn to play the recorder, developing their understanding of notation, rhythm and melody. Pupils in Years 4, 5 and 6 learn to play the steel pans through specialist teaching, developing instrumental technique, ensemble performance skills, musical vocabulary and the discipline required to perform collaboratively.

Our renowned steel pan provision is a distinctive strength of music at Grinling Gibbons Primary School and has become an integral part of the school’s identity. As pupils progress through Years 4 to 6, they develop increasingly sophisticated instrumental and ensemble performance skills, enabling them to perform with confidence and musicality for a variety of audiences. The high standard of musicianship demonstrated by our pupils means that our steel pan groups are regularly sought after to perform at community celebrations, launch events and cultural festivals, including the Blackheath Kite Festival. These opportunities enable children to experience the excitement and responsibility of performing in public, helping to develop confidence, resilience, collaboration and a strong sense of achievement. Through these experiences, pupils gain valuable cultural capital, strengthen their connection with the local community and create lasting memories that enrich their primary school journey.

Singing is at the heart of our music curriculum. Pupils from Years 1 to 6 participate in regular whole-school singing sessions, developing vocal technique, musical memory, pitch accuracy and performance confidence whilst fostering a strong sense of belonging and community.

Our pupils also benefit from our valued partnership with Blackheath Halls and Lewisham Goes Gospel, participating in collaborative music projects, workshops and mass singing events alongside children from other schools. These experiences provide opportunities for pupils to perform in larger ensembles, develop their confidence, experience high-quality musical tuition and broaden their appreciation of the performing arts.

Performance opportunities are carefully planned throughout the year and form an integral part of our music curriculum. Children regularly perform to their peers, families and the wider community, celebrating their achievements and developing confidence as musicians. Our steel pan programme culminates in a vibrant end-of-year performance that showcases pupils’ musical progress and brings our school community together through celebration and shared experiences.

Through our listening curriculum, pupils explore music from a diverse range of cultures, traditions, genres and historical periods. In line with our commitment as a Race and Conscious Equality Charter Mark Beacon of Excellence School, we ensure that the music children study reflects the rich diversity of our school community and the wider world. This enables pupils to see themselves represented within the curriculum whilst developing respect, understanding and appreciation for the experiences and contributions of others.

Impact

By the time pupils leave Grinling Gibbons Primary School, they have developed a strong foundation of musical knowledge, skills and understanding. They can perform with increasing confidence, compose creatively and listen critically, using appropriate musical vocabulary to discuss and evaluate music.
