Year 6
Welcome back!
Welcome to the start of another school year; we hope you have had an amazing summer with your children. At this point in the year, we aspire for all children to have stewardship of their own learning by continuously aim high. As a year 6 family, we hope to dig deep into our prior learning and knowledge, be watered with fantastic teaching and learning opportunities and grow into well rounded young people. As you know, Year 6 is an especially important year as we have the Key Stage 2 SATs in May. From the very first lesson, we will be working hard to ensure that your child is ready for these however we cannot do this without your help. As a team, we want to thank you in advance for all your support as without you, none of this will be possible. Go team!

What we will be learning this term
- English Texts: The Arrival by Shaun Tan, Freedom Bird by Jerdine Nolen, Rose Blanche by Ian McEwan and Romeo and Juliette.
- Destination Reader Texts: Black and British: A short, essential history by David Olusoga, Boy in the Tower by Polly Ho-Yen Letters from the Lighthouse by Emma Carroll and Holes by Louis Sachar.
- Maths: Number – place value, addition and subtraction.
- Computing: We are toy makers, and we are connected.
- Science: Animals including humans.
- RE: Christianity – Journey of life: What religions believe happens after we die and Judaism- Prayer and worship of God.
- History: World War Two.
- Geography: Ordinance survey maps and longitude and latitude.
- Art: From My Window Freedom to Paint – Intuitive Art Making a Pocket Gallery – Artist: David Hepher.
- DT: Construction: What ways could Britain have improved their battle techniques? Shelters, Aeroplane, Safety of fortress.
- PSHE: New beginnings, as well as our new Strengthening Minds programme – Life After Lockdown.
- PE: Relationships – Attraction to others; romantic relationships; civil partnership and marriage. Recognising and managing pressure; consent in different situations. Expressing opinions and respecting other points of view, including discussing topical issues.
- Music: Advanced Rhythms: Focus on pulse and rhythm through use of Kodaly method, including playing percussion and notating rhythms and songs of WW2: Developing greater accuracy in pitch.
PE days
Year 6 have PE on Mondays and Wednesdays. On these days, children need to come to school wearing their school uniform and with their PE kit and trainers in a bag.
PE uniform
Blue or black shorts or tracksuit bottoms, with a white T-shirt and plimsolls or black trainers. Please ensure that every item of clothing has your child’s name on it.
